| December 2001 - 7 ways your Forwarder can make your busy day easier !! |
| 1. Ask
your forwarder to appoint a single point of contact for
your company. They must have the knowledge and authority
to ensure that your freight is handled in accordance with
your instructions, and charged correctly to your
quotation. This contact must also develop an
understanding of your business and offer suggestions of
ways that you can utilize your freight in the most
efficient and economic ways. They will be your voice
within your forwarder and if they are doing their job
well will save you time and money ! 2. Ensure that you are kept up to date with changes and developments with services, tariffs, laws, rates and technology. A change that may seem small to most may have a significant effect, or create a significant opportunity on the business that you do.] 3. Quotations are important. Ensure that your quote is current and kept up to date. Quotes should be kept simple. Document and handling charges can often be consolidated into one charge. Quotes should include everything that you will be charged for and should clearly detail what is and what is not included. The service, transit time and frequency of service should also be stated. If you request a verbal quote ensure that it is also put in writing and sent to you. 4. Your forwarder should track your import orders on your behalf and keep you informed on them. Status reports can be faxed and emailed daily or weekly - but the best method is to have the current information available on the internet so you can access it at all times. Some companies offer huge amounts of information - but really the only information that really matters is when will you get the freight at your premises. 5. Despite everyones best efforts, from time to time you may experience delays, shortage or damage to your shipments. The problems that these can cause can be minimised providing that you are kept informed of the problems and that your forwarder assists you in the claims procedure. 6. Knowledge is a powerful tool and whilst it is good for your forwarder to visit you and understand your business, it is equally useful for you and your staff to visit their operations. Not only will you pick up some tips that may save you time and money, it will give you the chance to ensure that they have the equipment and technology to handle your cargo with the care that it deserves. 7. Where possible use a single company for the forwarding and customs clearance. This will save you time and money especially as the forwarding industry moves towards a more "Door to Door" mentality.
